Ryan Honick

Ryan is a professional Goaltending Consultant, and the President of GDI USA. He has been coaching since 1999 and is the Director of Goaltending for the Chicago Mission. Ryan previously spent 6 seasons in the ECHL, 5 seasons in the USHL, 5 seasons in the NAHL, and 8 seasons in the NCDC/EJHL. He was also named USA Hockey Central District Goalie-Coach-In-Chief in 2019.

Ryan has seen four of his goaltenders drafted to the NHL and six selected to the US National Team Development Program. He has worked with three goaltenders in the ECHL that have gone on to play in the NHL. Many of his affiliated students play in the professional, collegiate, and amateur levels of the game, and include ten individual accolades. The 2015, 2014, 2012, 2010, and 2009 ECHL Goaltender of the Year award winners, the 2016 USHL Goaltender of the Year, the 2017 and 2016 USPHL-Premier Goaltender of the Year, the 2014 USPHL-Elite Goaltender of the Year, and the 2011 EJHL Goaltender of the Year.

Ryan is an understudy of NHL Vancouver Canucks Goaltending Coach Ian Clark and has also mentored under David Marcoux, former NHL Calgary and Carolina Goaltending Coach, and Franz Jean, NHL Tampa Bay Goaltending Coach.

Ryan is a contributing writer for InGoal Magazine, a global online goaltending resource and has presented at the Network Goaltending Symposium and USA Hockey Goaltender Coach Certification Pilot Program. Ryan is a Level 5 USA Hockey Certified Coach. He hopes to develop goaltenders throughout the US in an effort to strengthen its goaltending prowess and seek out the talented and ambitious athletes ready to compete at the next level. Now 45, Ryan is from Pittsburgh, PA and resides in Chicago, IL with his wife and Women’s Director Sanya Sandahl.

Sanya Sandahl

Women's Director, GDI Midwest

Sanya is a professional Goaltending Consultant and the Women’s Director for GDI Midwest. She has been coaching goaltenders since 2001 and has been directly involved with advancing dozens of girls to the collegiate level through her mentorship and networking skills.

Goaltending Coach for the USA Hockey Women’s Under 18 team for a 2nd year, she is now the Director of Girls Hockey at Team Illinois and Head Coach of their U19 and U16 teams. She was named the USA Hockey Central District Women’s Goalie-Coach-In-Chief in 2019. In addition to these roles, she is also the Goaltending Coach for NCHA D3 Aurora University after previously spending 12 seasons as Assistant Coach /  Goaltending Coach with MIAC D3 Augsburg University.

In 2013/2014, she worked with the WCHA D1 St. Cloud State University Women’s team, and while in Minnesota directed women’s programming for Premier Goaltender Development (PGD) for 5 years.

As a player, Sanya was an All-State goaltender for Duluth Central High School. She then played and graduated from Cornell University in 2003 where she was named “All-Ivy League” goaltender in 2002. After a two-year stint playing pro hockey in Switzerland for Damen Hockey Club Langenthal, she continued to play for the Minnesota Whitecaps in the Western Women’s Hockey League, winning the WWHL Championship in 2012.

Sanya brings a knowledgeable and extensive coaching base to us. She has been the head or assistant coach at Totino Grace High School, Maple Grove High School, and Benilde St. Margaret’s High School, all in MN. Sanya ran the Girl’s Goalie Camp for the National Sports Center in Blaine, MN for 3 years. She coached in the prestigious Minnesota High School Elite League from 2008-2015 and was the head goaltending instructor for the Os Hockey Training Program from 2007-2015. Sanya is a Level 4 USA Hockey Certified Coach and resides in Chicago, IL with her husband and GDI USA President Ryan Honick.

Ted Monnich

Dr. Theodore Monnich has been involved with all levels of ice hockey goaltending for over 40 years, and in six countries in North America, Europe and Asia. He has served as Head Instructor at Puckstoppers Goaltending School in London, ON, coaches with Goaliepro Consulting Oy in Helsinki, Finland. He lectures and coaches at GDI USA Regional and National level events. Ted currently works as a Mental Skills Coach and Goaltending Consultant with teams, coaches, and players in the NHL, AHL, ECHL, SPHL, NCAA, USHL, NAHL, and more.

Ted provides mental training and conditioning coaching to amateur and professional athletes, ensuring that they are as well prepared mentally, as physically, for the rigors of their sport. Ted has a Masters degree in Sport & Exercise Psychology from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. He is currently a Doctor of Education in Kinesiology with a focus on Facilitating Flow State and Peak Performance. Ted is a Contributing Author to InGoal Magazine. He is originally from Pittsburgh, PA and resides near Charlotte, NC.

Jay Chrapala

Guest Consultant, GDI USA

Jay is a GDI USA Legend as the former GDI Southeast Regional Manager and professional Goaltending Consultant. Retiring from competitive professional play in 2007, Jay joined GDI Southeast the following season. He played at ECAC West Manhattanville College, then went on to play professionally in the ECHL, SPHL, and Europe.

Relocating to Germany at the start of the 2018-2019 season as the Goaltending Coach for the DEL Iserlohn Roosters, he is currently the Hockey Director for the Hamburger Sports Verein (HSV).

His final year in Maryland, he was the Goalie Coach for Division 3 UCHC Stevenson University where his goalie was the recipient of the 2018 UCHC Goaltender of the Year award. He also worked for Division 1 Club ACHA US Naval Academy Men’s team.  He was with the USPHL Skipjacks Hockey Club for 4 seasons and was previously the Director of Goaltending for AYHL Team Maryland for 4 seasons, also serving as a Head Coach and an Assistant Coach during that span. What makes him unique compared to most other goalie coaches however, is his physiological expertise. Jay is certified by the NSPA as a personal trainer and is also CPR and AED certified. He has consulted for Pioneer Corporate Health, 368 Fitness, and Launch Sport Performance, and is now an official Strength & Conditioning Coach. He is a USA Hockey Level 5 certified coach.

Jay has been extremely successful due to his unique style, energy, challenging drills, and the ability to communicate and motivate the top athletes in our goaltending family. Jay is 41, from Hamilton, Ontario and resides in Hamburg, Germany with his wife Lily and daughter Luna

Chris is a Prototype Designer and Software Engineer for NIKE, Inc. (Portland, OR). He joined GDI USA in 2011, played college hockey at Lehigh University and high school at Choate Rosemary Hall.
